Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a product evaluation and improvement programme aimed at making products that are safe throughout their life cycle, circular and environmentally and socially responsible, i.e. created for the future. It is the practical, cross-cutting standard, considered a global leader for designers, brands and manufacturers, for the design and creation of products that ensure a healthy, equitable and sustainable future.

What attributes does the certification assess and what information does it collect?

Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a holistic, multi-attribute certification that verifies a product’s performance in five key areas of sustainability:

1. Material Health: it ensures that the materials used to manufacture a product are safe for human health and the environment and do not contain toxic substances.
2. Product Circularity: assesses the degree of circularity of products at different levels, analyzing the origin of their materials, design and future recovery pathways.
3. Clean air and climate protection: analyzes whether the manufacturing processes of the products protect air quality and use renewable and clean energies.
4. Water and soil Stewardship: seeks to ensure that water and soil quality is preserved or improved throughout the product’s life cycle.
5. Social fairness companies must be committed to upholding human rights and fair and equitable practices.

The program, managed and developed by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII), comprises the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard and the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Material Health Certificate® . Products can opt for the full Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard, which assesses all 5 attributes, or opt for the C2C Certified® Material Health Certificatetm which assesses the Material Health category.

• By having data from the entire product value chain, it facilitates the use of tools such as Life Cycle Assessment and the production of documents such as EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations).
